Mythbusters

So the Mythbusters decided to put one of the most long debated physics questions to rest this week. The myth was when a bunch of birds are in a semi truck and they begin to fly around does the truck lighter because there not standing on the surface of the truck. So the Adam and Jamie brought a couple of birds and put them in a container as a trial experiment and to see if when the bird flapped around there was any difference in weight. The test proved that there is no difference however they moved up to larger scale experiments using a group of about 20 pigeons in a u-haul container with atmospheric pressure finders and a scale. When the birds began to fly around you could see that even though they were not sitting on any surface they force of the bird flapping its wing went from actual wait to air pressure because it forced the air downward. Meanwhile Tori, Grant, and Kari wanted to see if a boat moving at 25 miles per hour can be split down the middle by hitting a channel marker. It was reported in newspapers however results showed that a boat traveling that slow could not be cut in half by traveling only 25 m.p.h. This is important because we can actually see that some reporters don't go into full depth about the stories they write.

Mythbusters

Wednesday a new episode of mythbusters was on, this episode was about hypnosis and if you can blow out a candle using frequencies. A man back in the early 1900's claimed he could blow out a candle with the sound of his bird calls. The idea was that the waves with a low frequency will vibrate the air creating enough pressure to put the candle out. When trying this they couldn't do it they just couldn't get the frequency low enough and strong enough so they amplified it with a speaker and brought in a singer would could get it a little lower. They had done it successfully. Then the second myth was whether you can get someone to do something against there will when on hypnosis they successfully got Grant under hypnosis but he didn't follow those commands. Adam and Jamie wanted to join in on the myth so they tested whether you could remember more details about an event when under hypnosis then you could when not under hypnosis. They had to small time actors come in and play a scene with Jamie (Tori, Grant, and Kary were not aware of the joke) Jamie and the actor(posing as a delivery man) getting into an argument. After the scene they told them of the actors and gave them a test to see what they could remember all of them failed, then when under hypnosis they were able to remember key things from the scene. The Hypnosis myths are very important to society after testing the myth about can you remember things this could be applicable to real life such as crime solving. If there was a witness who saw something but there memory was fuzzy they could be put under hypnosis to describe more about the crime so I think thats really cool.

Mythbusters

Everyone has heard the old saying, Can you teach and old dog new tricks, right? Well the mythbusters decided to check this myth out. They got two, age nine, huskies (A very difficult dog to train) and Adam and Jamie each took one dog and a real dog trainer and worked for one week to train them to do five tricks sitting, heeling, staying, lying down, and shaking hands. Turns out you could teach old dogs new tricks. Meanwhile Grant, Kari, and Tory wanted to see if you can beat a guard dog. They set up fencing and put a safe in the middle of the fenced in area and they tested five different ways to keep the dog from attacking the first way was distracting it with a steak, it distracted the german shepard for a minute or two but once it turned around and saw the intruder it attacked. Next up acting submissive, and the third was acting aggressive both tested negative. The scent of wolf urine that made the dog hesitate for a second but then attacked. Using the urine of a female dog in heat it was put on a cloth and dragged outside of the fencing by the teamates the guard dog couldn't keep its mind off of it even after looking directly at the intruder so that was confirmed. The final dog myth can you out smart a bloodhound they tested zig-zagging, running through water, covering them and the floor with pepper, cleaning and changing clothes, covering in cologne or coffee, and running in an urban enviorment, those dogs are extremley smart and couldn't get fooled no matter how hard they tried each myth was busted. This show is so interesting it's entertaining and it's educational some episodes are more closley impacted on someones life than others. I say that because some do have alot to do with saftey and everyday things people do so it's kinda cool that well known myths that people say are being tested.

Paper!!

I have one week to have my paper proposal done yet I still don't know what to write about. My problem is I don't watch these movies that was the first zombie/horror film I have ever seen in my life and to write a paper about something I know nothing about is very difficult. I don't really want to write about race, religion, gender, or social class because I believe that's going to be redundant. So now I thought about writing about real zombies from the voodoo religion I understand it is suppose to be a research paper my problem is I don't know a thesis I could write for this I have been looking up information for this specific subject. Well it's finally over I gave up fast food for Lent which is extremely difficult and I already know what I'm doing next year Pepsi. My weekend is gonna be boring I worked today and I work tomorrow then I go to my uncles house to enjoy Easter with my whole family. After reading this I hope anyone can assist me in an idea for a thesis for my paper this paper is going to be difficult for me like the last essay and considering I need to get an A on it to keep a B in the class I can use the assistance. In all honesty I don't understand how if I lose a total of 200 points in the class my grade is reduced to a B 2099 out of 2300 is a B just doesn't make sense to me.

Reading week 11

Today was the first day of class in just about 2 weeks we had a lot of catching up so we kinda talked about each reading quickly. The main reading I'd like to talk about is "What Makes a Great Movie." The reading was pretty interesting but I'd like to talk about my feelings on my perfect movie personally I like thrillers and revenge movies my favioret actor is Denzel Washington. Some titles I love are Inside Man, Man on Fire, Deja Vu, Count of Monte Cristo, Carlito's Way, and I'm sure a few others I can't think of off the top of my head. Movies like Count of Monte Cristo are amazing the tactics and intellegence to calculate the revenge of each man that screwed you over just makes me happy if you have any movies like that let me know. Inside Man and Deja Vu were to great thrillers I could not figure out Inside Man for the life of me I was not joking about like a week of trying to figure it all out. My all time favioret Man on Fire great acting great plot great revenge he was not going to die until he got that girl back and then finally gave himself up for her it was an emotional roller coaster. I dont know why I just went on for 10 sentences about my favioret movies but i could watch them over and over and it's worth noting. Another reading we had was "I, Robot" now that was a horrible movie I don't understand why we read it but the author talks about there is to much information to take in however I don't really agree with that statement it's pretty simple maybe if your studying it up and down but for the average person who watches movies it's not like if I get up to get a pop in the middle of it im lost the rest of the movie like Matrix and other movies tend to be. The movie was horrible to me. The final thing I have to say about his comments is I agree with him saying the movies can be almost mind altering any movie that makes you think for a while to me is a great movie however I dont think I, Robot does that.

Mythbusters

This week on Mythbusters they did something a little different. Fans emailed them complaining that some myths they tested earlier in the season were flawed and explained what they could have done to retry and re bust or confirm the myths. First myth they retested was the Sniper myth in which a Vietnamese and an American sniper were trying to take one another out. Supposedly the American shot the Vietnamese through the scope and straight into his eye killing him. When previously tested the myth was presumed busted however complaints that they were using the wrong type of scope that the Vietnamese had and wrong type of firearm the American had. The Mythbusters retry the myth and come to a almost similar conclusion the only bullet that penetrated all the glass and went into the dummies skull was an armor piercing bullet which generally snipers didn't have however they still decided to call it plausible instead of busted. Next myth was if two hammers collided would they explode originally they called it busted fans argued that they can't use new hammers because the myth was from back in the day. One fan a blacksmith sent them old tempered pre-WWII hammers and they used a rig to continuously slam them into one another. The most that happened was a few chips came off of one hammer. It didnt explode like the myth is said however the fragments could be deadly it was busted though. Mythbusters is an amazing show it shows the physics of everyday life and I just love how crazy some myths can be. It's as if the simplest myth they can make fun. It's important to everyday life some of these myths are cost saving when it comes to fuel economy and some are about saftey issues. They are wide ranging yet all intresting.

Vacation

It's about the middle of my vacation and nothing exciting has happened yet. So far I have been hanging out with a few friends at my house usually playing mario kart. Jack has been playing amazing mario kart latley and continues to win however that will not last long. Otherwise I went bowling last night and had a good time then upon leaving my friends car wouldn't start it was pretty funny. I guess the battery was dead so I jumped it and we were good to go. At the bowling alley I ran into an old friend. I haven't seen him since almost a year now it was good to see him and when golf season starts we should be seeing alot more of one another. He didn't like the college he was going to so he came back to OCC for a little while. I recently found out another friend of mine that moved to arizona is coming back for a few days to visit and go to a wedding. I can't wait to see him we've known eachother since the third grade it's gonna be great to see him. It's good to be out of school for a little while it gives me some time to think about what I wanna do for next semester. I think I'm gonna go to OCC and get some credits from there and transfer them to Wayne State. Two major reasons I want to do that is because with all the construction I don't feel like going to the main campus and secondly it's alot more inexpensive to get these b/s credits outta the way over there than at Wayne. So that pretty much my week not to exciting but not very boring so my breaks been good so far.

"Society's Need For A Queer Solution"

The second reading starts out with a person talking to there male friend who is nervous to tell the truth about his homosexuality. He gives them his journal which explains how though he is sexually attracted to males he is still just like everybody else so he became more understanding of his sexual prefrences. The authour expresses her total dumbfoundedness on the subject. She proceeds to say how before that point in her life she was continually praticipating in gay jokes, and generalizations. She asks the question why do we seperate gays from the society. The answer because they aren't part of the mainstream. The essay compares Ellen Degeneres and her coming out and how the show "Friends". Ellen lost alot of ratings after coming out compared to "Friends" because she advocated homosexuallity. "Friends" on the other hand made jokes of two women who were raising a child. Later they talk about Will & Grace and how different a homosexual acts compared to a heterosexual. For example Jack acts like the stereotypical homosexual male. Judith Lorber talks about gender and how it is assigned using genitalia. It differentiates masculine and feminine. The essay compares Will and Nathan one missing the world series the other trying on tight jeans. The essay compares how homosexuality is portrayed and how people tend to react to the way it is being portrayed. Personnally I thought the reading was intresting yet it's arguments weren't strong enough.

"Not that theres anything wrong with that"

The reading first begins about talking about the word queer, It's origins is from an AIDS activist group who began another group called Queer Nation. The word queer once a derogatory word for gays transformed into a term that was less derogatory and more of a name. When Seinfeld debuted in 1989 originally called The Seinfeld Chronicles it did rather poorly but in January of 1991 Seinfeld became widely popular. The reading begins talking about how the show was created and the actors mirror Seinfeld's real friends except in a more exxagerated way. The show targeted urbanity's and baby-boomers who looked forward to the new episode every Wednesday. As the reading describes the show seems to be generally heterosexually aimed. Seinfeld, Elaine, and sometimes George always had a new relationship with the opposite sex. Homosexuality has been illustrated in Seinfeld on three separate episodes they have homosexuality shown. Semiotics comes up in the essay referring to the pink triangle and the beginning of the episodes that were once used during the holocaust to mark the homosexuals for persecution. They describe how the name "Monk's" the restaurant they constantly go to is a brotherhood for men. Then the next few pages have dialect from some episodes about Seinfeld and his use of words or actions that make him very much masculine. Then the essay shows more dialect about how he has gay instances like when a baseball player separates himself from Jerry and Elaine mirrors it to her own personal relationships with men. The whole essay refers to how homosexuality comes up in the show and the different ways it comes up. The essay was pretty interesting by the ways it looks at how the show refers to homosexuality. Personally I don't understand how a person can look at every degree of a show to find homosexual tendencies in that specific show.

mythbusters

This week watching mythbusters, I watched them test disposable lighters, they tested several different myths about how they may explode. The first was in the dryer it didnt work the lighter didnt explode. Then they tried to put it in a hot car and the lighter did not ignite. They also try to ignite it using the sparks from a guy welding and that worked it ignited in a matter of seconds. The final and coolest myth they tested was they had the lighter ignited sitting on the floor and built a rig to hit the lighter with a golf club and upon impact all the gas was realead and a burst of flames ignited. I thought that was really sweet. The next myth they tested was about the old west and the guns they used. The first myth was can someone shoot off five bullets with a pistol before a silver dollar hit the ground and if you want an idea of how fast that was it was about .333 seconds which is ridicolously fast. Then they tried to put a whole through a solid dollar with a old west gun and were not successful. They did use a newer gone and it worked. Finally can someone being hung be set free by someone shooting the rope and cutting it. That actually was successful but it took 5 shots so it was more of plausible than confirmed. Before they left they put 500 disposable lighters in a car and but a heater in the car that heated the car up to 800 degrees. Finally they added an ignition source and the whole car was up in flames. This show is pretty sweet they prove whether a myth is true or not and sometimes its useful. Though this show has crazy explosions and ridicolous things happening i believe this show is very intellectual compared to reality TV a subject we spoke of all week. It uses science to dissprove everyday myths or some just outrageous myths. To some extent they even help clear falsely based fears that people may have because of myths.

reading

This week I read about reality TV and how it became popularized by shows like The Real World the reading was pretty intresting. While I was reading about Rosie I the author tends to speak about her as if she is an awesome person and is this open honest kind hearted lady, and also how she tends to steal the spotlight. I dislike Rosie alot one time I read in the paper about how some lady complaining about how she dictates the View, and a couple weeks ago i watched 10 minutes of it and that lady just takes over she has to be the loudest most talkative person out of the cast. Sex, drugs and cocoa puffs was a intresting read as well he makes the assumption that a majority of the time theres that odd couple that always argues. One being clean and neat, and the other a complete slob. Then ofcourse he sits down and watches the real world and how ridicolous that show was and kinda compares it to his own life making the show seem like it is reality based. However the show was different back then compared to now. Black bart was also a reading this week that i found kinda cool i never new of a Black Bart. And the way african americans take him and use him as an icon of the social ills going on was genuis. Overall I think this weeks readings were alot more intresting then the past.

Week 5

So I just finished the essay and it was kind of confusing. Describing what was going on in the advertisements was simple but after writing just the first advertisement about me it got a little redundant. The paper was just something that I wasn't interested in it was one of those essays a person feels like they were forced to write. I hope the next essay is a little bit more free to work with like of course i could choose the advertisements but it was a fixed idea, "How it reflects you". The rest of the class I feel is going great I began to speak up a little bit more than the first 2 weeks of class. I think that Ellen has done a good job with the new approach she took on getting us to separately disscuss the reading then talking about it as a whole class. Initially the class discussion wasn't much of a discussion at all. Reading through the syllabus I notice that there is no section for Music which i wish there was maybe teaching this class again Ellen can ad that as a key element of her teachings because music is something everyone listens to. Like I'm not the type to watch T.V. or movies or magazines. Music is more of my thing and I'd argue many students enjoy music rather than watch television and there is advertising in music ESPECIALLY RAP! so it will be a great addition to the class if Ellen decides to add it in her class.

Mythbusters 4

Today I watched Mythbusters again, this episode was very intresting. There were news reports about Jawbreakers exploding in young childrens mouths when they applied pressure on to the jaw breaker. A key part to this myth is that the kids would put the Jawbreaker in the microwave for a little while then bit them. So the mythbusters set up a rig to apply an equal force to what the average mouth could apply and tested this myth. They first heated the jawbreaker up then applied force equal to one bite of the average human. Results were clear that the jawbreaker exploded. The reasoning could of been many one was the mix of Vitamin C and the chemicals in the jaw breaker to cause this explosion after radiated heat was added into the mix. And the other was some colors of the jawbreaker heated faster than others so if the colors were in the middle of the jawbreaker it would cause it to expand and after pressure is applied it could cause an explosion. The color green was rapidly heated compared to other colors and it held that heat for quite some time. The other myth tested out was the myth about deadly playing cards. I've seen people throw cards into watermelons cut bananas cut a cigarette in half while in someones mouth. The question was can the card kill someone so they put it to the test and first threw it as fast as they could into a balistics gel that replicates human flesh and saw that it can't penetrate skin. They built a rig that made cards fly top speeds of 150 mph. and yet still couldnt penetrate skin any farther than .5 inch wen they tried it on a real person all it did was cause a few cuts. This was a really intresting episode they brought physics and chemistry into this episode knowing what I know now I wouldnt ever put a jawbreaker in the microwave. And I know a card has to little a mass to penetrate someones skin. Final thing I have to say is the guy I wanted to win Top Chef won and I'm happy about that.

Week3 reading

This week I read about cool hunters, and what there job consists of. I found that this job could cause a lot of controversy. It was surprising that companies would actually hire people to follow an everyday man or woman to see what they wear next so that the company can create a similar outfit with there logo on it and sell it. I thought asking an everyday person what they thought of a specific shoe as the woman did at the shoe store was a great idea however, I would of taken a larger sample of people to verify the chance of success for that particular item. The other reading about race in advertising was very interesting. During discussion I was surprised that the NAACP actually rallied to get the head scarf off of Aunt Jemima. Something in that particular reading we did not mention was how companies attack foreign companies because of the unfair trade agreements between the two countries. I found this very relevant to Detroit considering the Big 3 are losing a lot of money to their foreign rivals. Commercials for the automakers centralize around "Buy American" campaigns like the Chevy Silverado commercial with the song "This is our country" in the background. The final reading was all pictures and not much reading so I don’t have much to say about it besides that I thought some of the signs and pictures were really interesting and my partner and I have a lot to say about our picture so can’t wait till Monday to talk about our photographs.

Mythbusters3

Wednesday night a Mythbusters episode was shown that was different from the rest. This Mythbusters episode tried to disprove themselves, many fans write in saying that they may have made a mistake when testing a myth so the hosts go back to the drawing board to retest the myth. Adam and jamie tried to retest a myth about making a rocket fire with the rocket fuel being gun powder, bologna, and a special gas, when retesting the myth they found that they were actually wrong and the fans were correct. Bologna did not increase the force that the rocket fired and the reason it worked initially was because of the gas they used. Then next myth was explosive decompression the idea that if there is a whole the size of a bullet in an airplane the air would decompess the airplane and cause it to destroy. When retesting there results were conclusive and found that a bullet sized whole would not do the job but an airplane window would cause this to happen.

False Advertising

this is something that does intrest me im going in to Buisness administration and might just get into Marketing now these half truth commercials really make me mad. I don't understand how these advertising firms can get away with such lies. They take a fact paraphrase it and use it to there advantage however if they didnt paraphrase it who knows there product would probably look bad. Advertising does not have enough restrictions on it otherwise false advertisment cases would be more common and more successful. however as the reading showed some advertisments dont stretch the truth such as the volvo they have great commercials about saftey I was actually suprised about the ad campaign with kelloggs that it would be considered a drug if it was proven and took it off the shelves overall i found this reading to be informative and intresting i knew they always chopped up the truth to make it look good for thier product and this really helped me showed how bad it can be

Mythbusters2

Last night i watched Mythbusters again and this episode answered a question that has been on my mind for a long time simply it's why dont you just open the door if you drive into the water i thought it was so easy to do however it's not when you drive into the water and begin sinking the pressure just 2 feet underwater is so strong its almost impossible to open the door until the pressure equalizes wen the water totally fills up inside the car and equals the pressure outside the door wont budge similiar is that to the window you cant even budge the window because it has almost 300 pounds of pressure pushing on it from the outside (thats just 2 feet under) now they did try many other ways for example opening the door right away worked or opening the door by the time water got to window but the most intresting was he waited until the pressure equalized and just stayed calm not using any energy and taking deep breaths when the pressure equalized he was able to open the door and swim back up 13 ft. so they proved that u cant open the door under water until pressure equalizes the second myth they busted was you cant fold a piece of paper more than 7 times doing it by halfs and at first they couldnt do it with normal 8.5 by 11 office paper do to something called exponential growth wen u fold it 7 times the paper becomes 128 layers thick making it to thick to fold once they used thinner tracing paper they were able to bust the myth and fold it over 12 times by the way my other favioret show top chef just had its 1st of a 2 part finale and they eliminated probably the best chef named sam and kept the guy who everone hates i think that it was wrong and hopefully that guy loses to ilan the other finalist

Mythbusters

One of my favored shows I watch now is called mythbusters they take a myth or tall tale and try to find if there is any truth to that myth or not this week they had a special on pirate myths one myth was about the eye patch that it’s not just used for a gouged eye but for night vision purposes its said that having your rods the (part of your eye that helps pick up dim light) ready that you would be able to see in the dark much better than trying to walk through the dark after just getting out of a lit room this myth actually proved to be true with a few test taken place they successfully proved that a person could see better in the dark if they were the eye patch. Another myth they tried to solve was did more people die from the shrapnel when a cannon ball hit the side of the boat or did they die from the ball itself the idea is that the wood splintered and acted as a projectile and stabbed into the pirates and ended up killing them. After many test it concluded that the wood could not go fast and dangerous enough to kill stab someone. I’m interested in physics and love math this show takes these everyday myths and puts them to tests usually having to do with a lot of physics involvement I fell in love with this show instantly and invite you to watch it on Wednesdays at 9 when the new episode first airs.

Week2

After reading this weeks assignment i found it very intresting how carefully companies and advertising agencies analyze the target market and tailor the Advertisment to that specific groups wants and needs sometimes being successful and sometimes failing another thing i found intresting was choice of wording in terms of how a company goes about saying how there product works there not to specific yet not to broad with there word choices that can make even the most suspicious person think that ad had alot of truth to it. Wednesdays text was very intresting and got me thinking about many other companies that advertise the discussion in class concentrated on medicine alot however i found that cleaning angents have that new and improved or kills 99.9% and many other catch lines to get a person to by there product the reading for friday was intresting as well including the idea of a graphic novel sense of reading showing many pictures to help understand the text. Art is a important part of my life i actually have a sister that goes to art school and is studying to be an art teacher. but besides that i have the intrest of music as an art ofcourse this art is rap i do not enjoy the NEWER rap but more of the old school 2pac EAzy-E and other various artist from the 90's art is all around us there is no doubting that it's just identifying it in one slide u see a man screaming thats not art reffering to an abstract painting on a wall and to him maybe it's not but to me art is in the eye of the person looking at it some may think its not but some do
